What Does It Mean for Food To Be USDA Certified Organic?

Is you food USDA certified organic?
Many people have growing concerns about what is in their food. With increased knowledge and information about chemical pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and other chemicals in foods, many people are looking to organic selections instead. Still, can you trust every label that claims to be organic? Unfortunately, unless it’s certified organic, you can’t be sure. Read on to understand more about what it means for food to be certified organic.

Defining the Term Organic Food

The dictionary defines organic food as food production that involves no use of chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or any other artificial agents. In other words, organic food grows relatively naturally and remains in its natural state.

Certified Organic Food

When food has the certified organic stamp from the USDA, it tells the consumer that the farmer or producer meets the government’s strict standards for processing, growing, and handling food organically.

Note that a label reading 100 percent organic isn’t the same as the USDA stamp of approval. Anyone can claim something is 100 percent organic. However, falsifying a USDA-certified label is illegal.

Obtaining Organic Certification

According to the USDA, there are five steps to organic certification, and they are as follows:

  1. Provide a detailed plan for organic production.
  2. Have your implemented organic system certified by a USDA certifying agent.
  3. Have an inspection.
  4. Wait for the agent to review the inspection report.
  5. Get a decision from the USDA.

The process sounds simple, but it takes a lot of time, patience, work, and money to become certified organic.

The Benefits of Organic Certification

Since the process is rigorous, companies and farmers wouldn’t strive for certification if it wasn’t worth it. Here are the many benefits of having a certified organic label:

  • It gives you an ability to sell in specialized markets and increase brand awareness.
  • An increase in revenue usually accompanies certification.
  • You’re likely to earn consumers’ trust when they see that organic is important to you.
  • You get the satisfaction of knowing you are bringing your customers the healthiest options available and protecting the environment.
